Ivan Törzs was born and raised in the USA. After studies at Princeton University and the Juilliard School, he came to Germany in 1982. He was Generalmusikdirektor and Operndirektor at the Mecklenburg State Theater Schwerin from 1993-2002. From 2002-2009 he was Principal Conductor of the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, Belgium. In 2010 he was appointed Professor at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, where he remained until 2021, at which time he was invited to be Professor Emeritus at the Korean National University of the Arts. He has conducted in numerous European opera houses, including Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Vienna, Prague, Budapest et al., and given master classes at many institutions, including Seoul National University, Ewha University, Chung Ang University and Northwestern University.
