Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem

Prof. Siegfried Jerusalem was born in Oberhausen in 1940. He studied bassoon, piano and violin at the Folkwang University of Music.

From 1961 to 1977 he was a bassoonist in various orchestras. From 1971 he took singing lessons in Stuttgart. In his first engagements (1976 Darmstadt and Aachen, 1977 Hamburg, Zurich and Stuttgart) he sang Lohengrin. In 1977 he made his debut as Froh (Das Rheingold) at the Bayreuth Festival, where he was a member of the ensemble until 1999. As a Wagner singer he has acquired an international reputation and has made guest appearances in roles such as Siegfried, Lohengrin and Parsifal at all the major opera houses. Today he devotes himself increasingly to contemporary music and lieder singing. He consistently appears on stage in character roles, most recently as Herod in the opera “Salome”. From 2001 to 2009, he was rector of the Nuremberg-Augsburg Academy of Music.
