
Prof. Christian Altenburger studied at the University of Music of his hometown Vienna and with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School New York.
At the age of 19, he made his debut as a soloist at the Vienna Musikverein. This was quickly followed by engagements with top international orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under famous conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Christoph von Dohnányi and Lorin Maazel. In addition to his solo activities, chamber music is a special focus of his artistic work. From 1999 to 2005 he directed the Mondseetage Festival together with the actress Julia Stemberger. From 2003 to 2019, he was responsible for the artistic direction of the Schwäbischer Frühling chamber music festival and has been artistic director of the Loisiarte festival since 2006. After many years as a professor at the Hanover University of Music, Christian Altenburger was appointed professor at the Vienna University of Music in 2001.
