Prof. Galina Vracheva was born in Bulgaria, began her musical education at the Sofia Conservatory and studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and at the Munich University of Music and Theatre.
She has won multiple prizes (e.g. “Senigallia” in 1978, “Maria Canals de Barcelona” in 1984), recorded numerous CDs and is one of the outstanding concert improvisers internationally. She became known to classical music fans in Germany not least through her long-standing collaboration with BR-Klassik on the program “Wunsch:Musik,” in which she improvised listeners’ requested melodies live in the studio for several years. Since 2014, Vracheva has held a professorship for the compulsory subject of improvisation for pianists at the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana in Lugano and, since 2018, also at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. Master classes in Amsterdam and at Haus Marteau as well as jury work at international music competitions complete her teaching activities. In 2006 she composed the chamber opera “The Gift of the Magi” and in 2009 the opera “Gottfried Keller”.
Galina Vracheva is currently working on a complete recording of all of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s piano concertos with conductor Elisabeth Fuchs and the Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra. A special feature will be live improvised cadenzas.
